Founded on December 5, 1919, and commencing operations on June 14, 1940, Avianca is a Colombian airline with a rich history. It proudly holds the distinction of being the flag carrier of Colombia, a legacy it has carried since its inception under the name SCADTA. The airline's headquarters are situated in Colombia, with its registered office located in Barranquilla. The global headquarters of this esteemed airline are in Bogota, and its central hub is El Dorado International Airport.
Avianca stands as the flagship carrier among a group of ten Latin American Airlines that collaborate closely through a code-sharing system. It holds the honor of being the second-largest airline company in Latin America and boasts an extensive network of destinations across the region.
Through its predecessor, SCADTA, Avianca has the distinction of being the second oldest extant airline globally, surpassed only by KLM. In December 2019, the airline celebrated its remarkable 100th anniversary, marking its status as the oldest airline in the Western Hemisphere. On June 21, 2012, Avianca officially became a member of the esteemed Star Alliance, solidifying its global presence. However, it faced financial challenges and filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in New York City on May 10, 2010.
History
The history of Avianca can be traced back to its founding on December 5, 1919. The airline achieved a significant milestone on September 5, 1920, when it completed its inaugural flight, carrying 57 pieces of mail. The pioneering spirit of Helmuth von Krohn propelled this endeavor. The fleet initially comprised nine aircraft with an impressive range of 850 kilometers, accommodating up to four passengers and two crew members.

National airways of Colombia
The city of Barranquilla, owned by United States businessmen, merged with the Colombian regional airline SACO on June 14 1940. In the year 1946, the airline company began flights to Lima, Panama City, Miami, New York City and Quito using the C-54 Skymasters and Douglas DC-4s. Avianca, in the year 1951, acquired Lockheed Constellations and Super Constellations. The company transported the Colombian delegation to Melbourne Olympics in 1956. The company also built the Avianca building in Bogota during the 1960s, and it was inaugurated in the year 1969 on the south side of Santander Park. Avianca leased two Boeing 707s in 1961 to operate the international routes, and on November 2, 1961, it also acquired its own Boeing 720s. The airline became the first Latin American airline to operate the Boeing 747-100 in 1976. After three years, the airline company started its operations with more 747s and it also had two Combi aircraft.
Avianca constructed an exclusive terminal called the Terminal Puente Aereo in 1981. President Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala inaugurated it. It served four flights to-

Merger system
SAM, the regional carrier of Avianca and the helicopter operator Helicol merged in 1994. This arrangement also allowed for specialized services in Cargo and postal services. Avianca Postal services became Deprisa in 1996, and it provided various mail services.
Avianca officially opened its new hub in Bogota on December 10 1998. It offered around 6000 possible connections per week. It also had an increased number of frequencies and scheduled destinations taking advantage of the privileged geographical location of the country's capital.
Summa alliance (2002-2004)
After the attacks of September 11, Avianca and the primary rival ACES joined efforts to create the Alianza Summa, and it began merged operations on May 20 2002. It also offered an efficient service concerning the quantity, security and quality. The alliance had to be disbanded due to adverse circumstances within the industry and markets.
American Continent Airways (2004-2009)
Avianca concluded a significant reorganization process on December 10 2004 and obtained confirmation of its reorganization plan and it was financially backed by the Brazilian consortium, the Synergy group and the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Colombia. It allowed the airline to obtain funds worth US$63 million in 13 months following the withdrawal from bankruptcy.
