Ethiopian Airlines, which is government-owned, was established on December 21, 1945, and commenced operations on April 8, 1946, eventually expanding to international flights in 1951. The airline has been an active member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) since 1959 and a member of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) since 1968.
The airline became a member of the Star Alliance in December 2011, with its headquarters situated at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. Operating from its headquarters, it serves a network of 125 passenger destinations, including 20 domestic and 44 freighter destinations. Ethiopian Airlines also maintains secondary hubs in Malawi and Togo.
Ethiopian Airlines holds the distinction of being the largest airline on the African continent in terms of passengers carried, fleet size, revenue, and destinations served, ranking as the world's fourth-largest airline.
Corporate Affairs
Mesfin Tassew currently serves as the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, having been appointed by the airline's board of directors on March 24, 2022. Prior to this role, he held the position of CEO at Asky Airlines. The airline is wholly owned by the government of Ethiopia and has consistently operated without undue government interference, even during times of turmoil and hardship. Notably, Ethiopian Airlines maintained professionalism and was referred to as a 'capitalist success in Marxist Ethiopia' in 1988.
In 1980, Captain Mohammed Ahmed assumed the role of CEO and implemented a 10% reduction in the workforce. The airline continued to acquire Western aircraft rather than Soviet ones, despite political affiliations with the Soviet Union. Acquisitions included the Boeing 727 in 1979 and the Boeing 767 in 1984. Despite challenges such as famine, unfavorable exchange rates, and economic instability, the airline retained its reputation for excellence in maintenance and training. The Financial Times recognized it as one of the most profitable airlines on the entire African continent throughout the 1980s.
In 1991, following a violent overthrow of the communist government by the Ethiopian People's Democratic Front, the airline managed to post a profit for the year. In 1994, 40 top executives were dismissed after signing a letter of protest against a government report. Dr. Ahmed Kellow, an industry outsider, was appointed as the general manager.
In 2018, it was announced that the Ethiopian government would partially or fully privatize several state-owned enterprises. However, in October 2020, the Ministry of Finance postponed the privatization of the state-owned airline.

Organization
The Ethiopian government reorganized the Airline as a wholly owned aviation holding group in July 2017. The primary aim was to maximize efficiency and enhance customer service to a global standard. The initial group consisted of the following-
The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise.
Passenger Airline Company.
Cargo Airline.
Logistics Company.
Ethiopian Aviation Academy.
Ethiopian In-flight Catering service.
Ethiopian MRO services.
Ethiopian Hotel and Tourism Services.
Head office
The airline currently has its own head office at the Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa. However, it intends to build a new head office facility. In 2009, a contest for the design was held. However, those plans worked poorly. On 16 February 2011, it also held a second round of the contest. In September 2011, the BET Architect plc won the contest.
Strategic ambition and landmarks
This Airline was also featured by the economist as a prime example of excellence in last 1987. In the year 2000, Paul B Henze recognized the airlines as being one of the most all-time profitable airlines in the Third world. In July 2011, Ethiopia was named as Africa's most profitable Airline for the year 2010 by the Air Transport World.
The revenue of the Airline is also maintained by providing aircraft maintenance to the foreign airlines. They are specialists in training for both Ethiopian and foreign trainees. Pilots and technicians graduate from the pilot school which was inaugurated in 1964 and the aviation maintenance technician school which was established in 1967.
The Ethiopian Airlines also started the Vision 2010 in the year 2005 which aimed to increase the passenger traffic to 3 million, revenue to US! Billion and employees to 6000 by the year 2010. By 2010, the Ethiopian airlines had exceeded all goals and the net profit of the company for the fiscal year 2019 was US$121.4 million.
Destination
As of June 2020, the airlines served 127 international and 22 domestic passenger destinations. It also had around 58 cargo destinations. The Ethiopian airlines served more destinations in Africa than any other airlines. As of April 2013, the five densest route of the airlines are-
