British Airways, the flag carrier airline of the UK, is headquartered at Heathrow Airport in London. It was established on August 25, 1919, and ranks as the second-largest carrier in terms of fleet size and passengers carried. British Airways merged with Iberia in January 2011, forming the International Airlines Group (IAG), a Madrid-based holding company. IAG stands as the third-largest airline group by annual revenue and the second-largest in Europe. It is also listed on the London Stock Exchange. Notably, British Airways was the first passenger airline to generate over US$1 billion in revenue.
The British Government created the British Airways Board to oversee two nationalized airline corporations, British Overseas Airways and British European Airways, along with two regional airlines, Northeast Airlines and Cambrian Airways. These four entities merged on March 31, 1974, to give rise to British Airways. In February 1987, as part of a broader privatization initiative, BA was privatized during the tenure of the Conservative government after 13 years of state ownership.
British Airways is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance and has strong partnerships with Canadian Airlines, Qantas, American Airlines, and Cathay Pacific.
History
In 1953, numerous proposals were put forth to unite British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) and British European Airways (BEA) into a single British airline. BOAC was particularly concerned about BEA's use of its subsidiary, Cyprus Airways, to operate routes east of Cyprus, a move that went against their agreement. Miles Thomas, BOAC's chairman, advocated for a merger to resolve this dispute and found support from Rab Butler, who was the Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time.
Following the recommendations of the 1969 Edwards report, a British Airways board was established on April 1, 1972, tasked with managing both BEA and BOAC.
After two years of competition with British Caledonia, the UK government underwent a significant shift in aviation policy in 1976 to prevent the two carriers from competing on long-haul routes.
British Airways and Air France operated the supersonic Aerospatiale-BAC Concorde. Services to the US commenced on May 24, 1976, with flights to JFK airport and Washington Dulles. In 1981, Sir John King, appointed as chairman, instructed the airline to prepare for privatization. Under King's leadership, British Airways became the most profitable airline while others struggled.
In 1984, Virgin Atlantic, founded by Richard Branson, emerged as a formidable competitor to British Airways, leading to intense rivalry and a lawsuit against Virgin Atlantic in 1993, alleging customer poaching.
In 1993, Lord King stepped down as chairman and was succeeded by Colin Marshall as his deputy, with Bob Ayling becoming CEO. Although Ayling initially performed well, the airline reported an 84% drop in the first quarter the following year, leading to his removal in March 2000. Willie Walsh, the managing director of Aer Lingus, assumed the role of CEO in 2005.
In 2008, British Airways announced a merger plan with Iberia, allowing both airlines to maintain their original identities. British Airways also became the official partner of the London 2012 Olympic Games. On May 27, 2017, the airline experienced a computer power failure, resulting in flight cancellations and significant passenger disruptions.
