Caribbean Airlines, a state-owned airline company and the flag carrier of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as Jamaica and Guyana, was established on September 19, 2006. It commenced operations on January 1, 2007, and operates flights to North America, the Caribbean, and South America. The airline has hubs in Port of Spain, Georgetown, and Kingston, with its main base at Piarco International Airport in Trinidad.
The Caribbean Airlines currently employs over 1700 people, making it the largest airline in the Caribbean. Its slogan is 'The Warmth of the Islands'.
History
The airline was merged with the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on September 27, 2006. Under the recommendation of Peter Davies, the CEO of BWIA West Indies Airways, the Trinidad and Tobago government approved the commencement of operations. However, due to failed negotiations between unions, BWIA was shut down just before the launch of Caribbean Airlines.
The staff was reduced to 800, and the airline began operations on January 1, 2007, initially with six Boeing 737-800 aircraft and one Airbus A340-313. It operated the London Heathrow route until May 2007.
Caribbean Airlines offered two classes of service, business class, and economy class, with daily direct services to Miami, Toronto, Jamaica, and New York. Philip Saunders, the VP of commercials of Star Alliance, was appointed as the new CEO of Caribbean Airlines, which also took over the operations of Tobago Express.
In March 2008, the airline added a daily direct service to Simon Bolivar International Airport, increasing its frequency of service to Caracas from daily to around ten flights per week. In May 2008, the airline acquired a seventh Boeing 737-800 and added a new route to Fort Lauderdale International Airport from Piarco International Airport, initially operating four times per week and later increasing to daily service.
Transavia Airlines agreed to operate on behalf of Caribbean Airlines in November 2008, leading to an expansion of the fleet to eight Boeing 737-800 aircraft. These aircraft underwent refitting, which included an extra nine inches of seat pitch in the business class cabin. This adjustment allowed the airline to increase flight frequency during peak travel periods. In June 2009, Sun Country Airlines, a US carrier, delivered a Boeing 737-800 to Caribbean Airlines.
On July 27, 2009, Philip Saunders announced his resignation as the CEO of Caribbean Airlines. The airline continued to serve the United States of America and Canada and established a codeshare agreement with British Airways.

Acquisition of Air Jamaica
Through the government of Trinidad and Tobago, Caribbean Airlines Limited also announced their plans to operate a base in Jamaica. It also followed the Divestment of Air Jamaica which occured from April 30, 2010 to April 2011. This Airline Company became the largest airline company in the Caribbean with a brand new hub in Kingston.
The Caribbean Airlines announced they would terminate the agreement with British Airways on March 4 2010. Air Jamaica and Caribbean Airlines Limited signed a final agreement to purchase Air Jamaica on April 28 2010. This agreement also stated that Caribbean Airlines would continue operating the routes of Air Jamaica and retain 900 of its employees.
Air India and Caribbean Airlines signed a travel pact for the Trinidad people travelling to India in August 2010.
In early 2016, it returned two Boeing 767-300ER aircraft to their lessor, which coincided with the termination of its only European route to the London Gatwick Airport. This was done to remove the unprofitable routes.
Corporate affairs
Blue, green and purple are the colours of Caribbean Airlines. They got represented in their new staff uniform. They also featured the hummingbird and the logo of Caribbean Airlines. However, one of the designs was incorporated as it had Balisier Flower as a symbol, which was the symbol of former ruling People’s National Movement political party. The logo was then changed, and it was redesigned without the flower. It was later on replaced with fruits. The tail designs of the logo featured a cricket ball, fruits, corals, butterflies, steelpan and fish.
Lorraine is the theme song of the Caribbean Airlines which was arranged in a Trinidadian calypso music style.
In the year 2020, the Airline launched a new logo and livery and rebranded itself. The very first aircraft to receive the new livery is the 9Y-TTI-ATR aircraft. The new logo also retains the iconic hummingbird. It infuses the fluid lines and the brighter hues to embody the spirit of the flight.
