Qatar Airways, established on November 22, 1993, commenced its operations on January 20, 1994. The Airways Company boasts several subsidiaries, including Qatar Airways Cargo, Qatar Airways Holidays, Qatar Duty-Free, Qatar Aviation Services, and The Qatar Aircraft Catering Company. Operating across more than 150 international destinations spanning Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, Qatar Airways calls Hamad International Airport its home base. With a fleet of over 200 aircraft, the Qatar Airways group employs a workforce exceeding 43,000 individuals.
This prominent Airways Company is also a valued member of the Oneworld Alliance.
Oneworld Alliance proudly marks Qatar Airways as the first Persian Gulf carrier to join a major airways alliance.
Origin Story
Until May 2002, Qatar was a shareholder in Gulf Air, alongside Oman and the United Emirates of Abu Dhabi. This historical decision made Qatar the very first Gulf country to withdraw from the airways alliance.

The CEO of the Airways Company in the year April 1995 was Sheikh Hamad Bin BinJabor Al Thani. The Airways Company also served two Airbus A310s, which served a route network including Bangkok, Cairo, Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, and Manila. Osaka, Tokyo and many other countries. Boeing 747SP acquired the Qatar Airways in 1996 by Air Mauritius.
In late 1996, services to Athens, Istanbul, Tunis and Madras were suspended. Calcutta and Muscat were the countries that were removed from the route in January and September 1997, respectively. The carrier placed a very firm order with Airbus for six Airbus A320s in July 1998. The carrier struck a deal with SALE, Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise, in 1998 to lease four Airbus A320s. Qatar Airways ordered International Aero Engines in October 2000. In 2001, it also resumed its service with Jakarta. Airbus A3290 became the first aircraft to resume International services to Iraq in June 2003.
The Qatar Airways group includes Qatar Airways, Doha International Airport, in-flight catering companies, and the corporate business air service. In July 2004, Zurich became the carrier’s 53rd destination worldwide.
Key People
In June 2017, Akbar Al Baker became the CEO of Qatar Airways. He has also been serving in this position since November 1996. He is also a member of the Heathrow Airport board.
Ownership and Subsidiaries
Since May 2014, the Airways Company has been wholly owned by the Qatari Government. The Government has fully controlled it since July 2013. It also followed a buyout of a 50% stake from some stakeholders and a former foreign minister. In March 2019, the Airways group employed more than 45,000 people. Out of these people, 32,000 worked directly for the airways. This airways company has also been described as the soft power diplomacy by the authoritarian Government. The human rights organization has also criticized Qatar Airways for their relationship with the Qatari State. As of February 2020, this airways company has been the largest stakeholder in the International Airways group with a 25.1% of the shares.
Cargo
Qatar Airways Cargo is the freight branch and the third largest international cargo carrier. In June 2009, dedicated Cargo flights were launched to the Cairo International Airport. The Airways Company launched its first US dedicated Cargo service on August 18 2010, from its hub in Doha to Chicago-O’Hare. It has a stop in Amsterdam.
The Global Supply Systems operated three Boeing 747-8F aircraft under a wet lease arrangement for the British Airways World Cargo. However, BA terminated the contract early on January 17, 2014. On the same day, an agreement with Qatar Airways to operate flights for the IAG Cargo using Boeing 777F.
Qatar Airways Cargo also announced they would launch a twice-weekly Boeing 777 Freighter service to LA on March 18 2015. Qatar Airways Cargo also announced that it would launch freighter operations on December 27 2016, to four new destinations in the Americas.

This is a corporate jet subsidiary of Qatar Airways and it is painted in the traditional colours of burgundy and grey.
Al Maha Airways
This Airways Company was a proposed airways based in Saudi Arabia. Now, it is wholly owned by Qatar Airways. This Airways Company was planned to launch in September 2014, and by May 2015, this airways company has already taken delivery of 4 Airbus A320 aircraft.
The Qatar Airways announced that the Al Maha Airways project has been cancelled in February 2017 and that the airways would not start operating due to ongoing issues.
Natural gas to liquid fuel determination
A Qatar Airways airline conducted the world’s first commercial passenger flight on October 2009 using a mixture of kerosene and gas-to-liquids fuel which is produced by the natural gas.
Sponsorships
The Airways Company has sponsored the weather forecasts since August 2005 on Sky News.
Qatar Airways became FC Barcelona’s primary Shirt Sponsor in July 2013. However, the sponsorship ended in 2017.
The Airways Company became the Official International Airways Sponsor for the Sydney Swans in the year 2016.
