Growth outside Hawaii
The airline company began to expand its footprint throughout the 1980s. It happened due to intense competition on inter-island routes which was created by the entrance of Mid Pacific Air. The company started its first foray outside the inter-island market in 1985. It first operated in the South Pacific and then through the rest of the Pacific. The business experienced success, but later on, it was forced to curtail all of its charter services when the Federal Government banned the B707 and DC-8 aircraft.
Hawaiian Airlines added L-1011s to its fleet between 1985 and 1986. It also used them to open up several services to other cities such as San Francisco, Portland, Las Vegas, Seattle and Portland, which pushed Hawaiian into further competition against the major US airlines.
The airline company also entered the new international markets of New Zealand and Australia in 1986 with a one-stop service at Pago Pago International Airport. The company also pursued military transport contracts, it led to massive growth in revenue of the company. It also led the inter-island service’s share of the revenues to shrink to about a third of the company’s total.
In the 1990s, the Airline faced a rough time as it faced financial difficulty and racked up millions of dollars in loss. Due to the increasingly unprofitable operations, the Airline filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy in September 1993. The company also reduced many of its costs during this time. It reorganized its debt, streamlined its fleet and wrestled concessions.
Second, bankruptcy and reorganization
The airline company filed for chapter 11 Bankruptcy history in March 2003 for the second time. It also continued its normal operations. The airline company also received court approval for the reorganization plan on May 2005. The airline company emerged entirely from bankruptcy protection on June 2, 2005. It emerged through reduced operating costs through the renegotiated contracts with the union work groups.
Post – Bankruptcy
The Hawaiian Airline Company began nonstop flights from Honolulu to San Jose. It made San Jose which is the fifth gateway city in California which is to be serviced by the Hawaiian. The other cities were Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento.
The Airline Company expanded the service between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii on May 2006. It also focused on developing nonstop service to Kahului Airport from San Diego, Portland and Seattle.
Hawaiian Airlines and the Air New Zealand signed a whopping $45 million contract for the Air New Zealand to perform heavy maintenance on Boeing 767 on July 24 2007. This contract lasted for about five years. Seattle Seahawks became the second sports team to use Hawaiian airlines to travel to the games in August 2007.
The Airline also launched a nonstop flight to Manila in March 2008. It was the first major international expansion of the Airline since it emerged from bankruptcy.
The airline company sought approval from United States department of transportation to begin the nonstop flights from Honolulu to Tokyo-Haneda in 2010. USDOT granted this approval, and the flight service began on November 18 2010.
The Airline Company also announced they will be renovating the check-in lobby of inter-island terminal at the Honolulu Inter-island terminal on March 31 2011.
It also expanded to the east coast with the daily flights to JFK airport on June 4 2012. The airline company also filed an application for a nonstop route between Kona and Tokyo-Haneda in August. However, the application was rejected. The Hawaiian airline company also unveiled plans to begin flights to Taipei on July 9 2013 as a part of the aggressive expansion plans.
Ownership and structure of the airline
The parent company of the Hawaiian Airlines Inc is the Hawaiian Holdings, Inc. It was also listed on the American stock exchange.
