Spirit Airlines, an ultra-low-cost carrier known for its budget-friendly fares, operates a comprehensive network of scheduled flights across the United States, South America, and Mexico. This primary low-cost U.S. airline has its headquarters in Miramar, Florida, and serves various destinations throughout the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. As of 2020, Spirit Airlines ranked as the eighth-largest passenger carrier in North America.
On July 9, 2022, JetBlue extended an offer to acquire Spirit Airlines for a total of US$3.8 billion. The majority of shareholders have given their approval for this deal. However, its finalization awaits regulatory approval from government authorities.
Founding
The company's origins trace back to 1964 when it was established as the Clippert Trucking Company. In 1974, it underwent a name change and became known as Ground Air Transfer.
2020s
In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Spirit Airlines received approximately $334 million in grants to support its employees until September 30. In July of the same year, the company announced plans to place around 20-30% of its employees on temporary leave starting in October.
Several pilots and flight attendants voluntarily agreed to take leave to mitigate the need for layoffs within the company.
Spirit Airlines made headlines on February 7 when it expressed its intent to be acquired by Frontier Airlines.
